I wake up to the heat of someone’s palm against my shoulder. Twisting around, my hand moves faster than my brain, and I snatch it off me.

“Jesse, it’s me, Bell,” she rushes out before I can take it any further.

“Fuck.” I release my grip on her arm and sit up, forcing myself back to the here and now.

“Did I hurt you?” I reach for her searching for any sign of a mark left by me.

“It’s fine. You barely touched me.” She holds her arm out letting me inspect it. I check it over one more time before releasing her and relaxing.

“You wanna talk about it?” I study her face, eyes calm, soft mouth. She’s not freaking out.

“Just some shit that visits my dreams sometimes, nothing that needs to touch you,” I reply, shocked I’m not retreating.

“I don’t mind, Jesse,” she pushes, and I almost cave. Almost.

“The last thing I want to do is talk about this shit, Bell.” She doesn’t argue or press, and I’m grateful for it. I don’t think I’d be able to keep my cool if she did.

“Come back to sleep.” She lies back down and I follow her. She doesn’t ask me any more questions, or make me feel like I need to tell her everything.

“That ever happens again, don’t wake me,” I warn. A menacing thought strikes through me picturing what could have happened if I didn’t wake in time. She’s lucky I didn’t hurt her, like the last time a woman touched me while I had a nightmare.

“You don’t always have to be so brave, Jesse.” Her hand moves to my dog tags. I don’t stop her. I’m starting to like the feeling of her hands touching them.

“Never tried to be, Bell. But talking doesn’t help me. Never has.” I think back to the time when I did try and it forced me out of control. Talking about those triggers only amplified my insecurities. When death sits afar, mocking you in the dangerous confines of your surroundings, it fucks with your head; nothing was going to change it.

Besides, my issues weren’t what I had done. They were what I had survived. My conscience wasn’t clear and my honor wasn’t clean.

“Promise me you won’t touch me.” I keep my tone even, controlled.

“I promise.” I take her hand in mine and bring it to my lips. Maybe one day I will let someone in. Let her in.

Today isn’t that day.

But today, I didn’t push her away.

That has to count for something.

Review

We all know Jesse, we've spent the past few books getting a glance at him. Yet again River shows us that not everything on the surface is as seems. Jesse is hiding so many things. His humor is there to cover all the darkness that lurks beneath the surface. Everyone loves a bad boy and Nurse Bell is no different. It just takes her a bit longer to realize he is worth the battle.

River had a great way of drawing you into the story. Another hard to put down book full of twists and turns. Watching the development of the relationship between Jesse and Bell is better than any movie. The Knight's Rebels keep you on your toes and you have to wonder what she will do next!

His mouth leaves mine and with his hand still on my leg, he demands, “Dig your heels in deep, baby.”

I give him what he wants, but not because he told me to. I give him what he wants because when his hand leaves my leg and pushes into the mattress, bringing his body up he goes even deeper into my body and those heels push hard.

Just as he demanded earlier, my hands go to his shoulders on my own accord and as he takes my body hard, my nails dig in with my heels still pushing hard against the small of his back. Our eyes never leave each other’s probing gaze. Never once do I take my eyes away from his, so full of lust that I know there isn’t an ounce of control left in his body.

He drops his head and I lift up to meet him in a kiss so sweet it doesn’t match the powerful way that he’s taking my body. A kiss that gives me more than words ever could at this moment. His hips slow and as his tongue rolls against mine, his hips start to take me in slow, deep rolls. He doesn’t pull back, just rocks his hips against mine.

AMBER'S REVIEW

Despite what Harper said I still am and always will be Team Beck! That being said I am not at all surprised that I loved his son. We met Megan briefly in Cohen's book. She is the widow of one of Cohen's team mates. Her story is so much more tragic than I expected. And Liam is ALL Beckett in his prusuit of the woman he knows is meant to be his.

If you're a fan of Harper Sloan then you MUST READ this book. It's a classic story and we get plenty of the men, women, and children that we've come to love.

Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed 'Estrogen Ocean', much to her husband’s chagrin. Her eyes stay trained on mine. An unreadable expression would be easier to accept. Instead, her face falls with sadness and despair. I don’t know her, but what I see in the depths of her eyes is an obvious sign of a life of loneliness and neglect. She’s definitely the girl in the picture, though. I’m certain. Her dark eyes can’t be mistaken for any other child’s. The almond shapes of them are as defined now as they were back then. Smiling gently, I tell her, “If you don’t give me a name, I’m goin’ to have to keep callin’ you ‘monkey’. You gonna let me do that?” A shy smile crosses her lips, and I hear a heavy breath in relief. She still doesn’t answer. “All right,” I sigh as I stand. My hand reaches out to the top of her head and I move to lay my palm on top of it, which she may allow but Cilas does not. I feel his fingers dig in to my arm and Casey’s body jerks in place as she watches with wide eyes. Lifting my hands in surrender, I placate Cilas without words and take a step back from a now-terrified little girl. “Maybe you’ll tell me next time,” I supply and watch her visibly relax.
